Creativity
Culture suggests art; and the Chinese are renowned world-wide for an artistic tradition that goes back thousands of years, and is still expressed today with that fine touch of delicacy and beauty so often lacking in modern western art. I was reminded of this just yesterday when looking once again at one of those marvellous representations of Our Lady, Queen and Empress of China. What taste, I thought, the artist has!; what sense of beauty and tenderness!; just to look at that work of art raises one's heart to God.

Subject: Exclusion of indissolubility of marriage

19 June 2008

Dear Msgr. Burke,

I am writing to request your comments regarding the exclusion of indissolubility of marriage.

I am an atheist (baptized in the Roman Catholic Church) involved in a somewhat complicated relationship with a devout Roman Catholic woman. We have known each other for 15 years and would like to be together, however she insists on a Catholic marriage. Of course I could simply find a priest who will not ask me any uncomfortable questions or pretend that I have not stopped believing; however, I have decided to take the matter seriously and investigate whether I am actually able to contract a valid Catholic marriage.

Self-esteem: Why?; Why not?

Self-esteem: Why?; Why not? (Homiletic & Pastoral Review, Feb 2008)

There is a proper mode of self-esteem which is beneficial to each individual, and there is a mode or model being propagated worldwide today which can be very harmful. First let us take a summary look at this latter mode which has in a short time come to dominate the psychological and educational thinking under which most modern young people are formed. Then we will note 1) the growing secular criticism being directed towards it, 2) analyze its fundamental anthropological defectiveness and, 3) see how a realistic self-esteem, in which positive and negative elements combine, is necessary to each person if he or she is to have psychic and spiritual health - and that this distinctive form of self-esteem is in fact inherent in a Christian spirit properly assimilated. Finally we will consider, with some concrete examples, how harmful self-esteem philosophy can make its way into Catholic religious education manuals.

Marriage in Tough Times (The Melbourne Record. May 12, 2007)

English | Marriage - Pastoral

A former judge of the Roman Rota has called for Catholics to play a bigger role in counter-acting divorce among friends and family members.

Monsignor Cormac Burke visited Australia this week to give lectures in Melbourne and Sydney. The theme of his Melbourne talk, delivered at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and the Family, was the importance of commitment in marriage. In an interview with The Record, Mons Burke warned of some of the dangers confronting marriages in the modern world.

"Atomic" explosions in marriage
Among these is a common lack of understanding that every marriage will inevitably go through tough times, including anger against one's married spouse. "All of the successful marriages I've seen have gone through plenty of troubles," he said.

Personalism, Individualism, 'Communio' (Osservatore Romano (English Ed.), April 28, 1993)

English | Personalism

"Communio" is the central and dominant theme of Vatican II, which presents the Church as the communion of the People of God, open to all men: a divine force to gather them into one. "The Church, in Christ, is in the nature of sacrament - a sign and instrument, that is, of communion with God and of unity among all men" [Lumen Gentium 1.]. And the Council issued a powerful call and laid down the inspirational guidelines for renewing the Church and the world through this sense of "communio" [cf. Relatio Finalis of the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops, Dec. 7, 1985: Enchiridion Vaticanum 9, 1800-1809.].

About God (Interview with TIME reporter, Miriam Murphy, Rome May 1990)

English | General

1.         Do you have a physical image of God?

I could answer Yes, if I thought the question refers to Jesus Christ, who is God-become-Man. But probably that is not what is being asked, and then the question itself needs some clarification.

(Interview with Bill West of Perspective: Sydney, October 1993)

1. We recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of Pope Paul's encyclical on contraception, Humanae Vitae. Many people have claimed that it has proved prophetic, especially in terms of the consequences of people not following the Church's teachings. Do you have any insights into this question?
